「刀姿 sword figure」
平造り庵棟、身幅重尋常、無反りふくら枯れる。茎は生で化粧鑢がかかり、茎尻は栗尻。
「地鉄 jigane」
地鉄は杢目肌が良く詰み無地風となり、地沸付く。
「刃紋 hamon」
刃紋は沸出来の中直刃でやや湾れる、刃縁砂流しかかり沸付く。釯子は刃紋成りに入り小丸に返る。
「特徴 detailed」
加藤運寿信一（本名：加藤信一）は、江戸時代末期、丹波国綾部藩（九鬼家）の藩工であり、江戸麻布にも住しました。石堂運寿藤原是一の門人で、「運寿」の名を許されました。
その作風は師・是一に酷似しており、荒い沸を伴い、匂口の深い互の目乱れを焼きます。銘には「丹波国綾部住加藤運寿信一作」「石堂運寿藤原信一」「丹波綾部臣加藤信一」などがあります。
本作は安政六年（1859年）の作です。前年の安政五年には井伊直弼による安政の大獄が行われ、翌年の安政七年には桜田門外の変で井伊直弼が暗殺されました。まさに幕末の動乱期に作られた短刀であり、その姿も時代を反映してふくらの枯れた鋭い造り込みをしています。
また、長さは短く仕立てられており、これは刀による斬り合いの際に前差が邪魔にならないように工夫されたものです。
刀身は古研ぎながら錆はなく、拵は幕末に作られた合口拵で、状態も良好です。
鑑賞用として優れているだけでなく、居合や試斬、また弓道の前差としても最適です。
Kato Unju Nobukazu, whose real name was Kato Nobukazu was the official swordsmith of the Ayabe domain (ruled by the Kuki family) in Tanba during the late Edo period. He also resided in Azabu, Edo. A disciple of Ishidō Unju Fujiwara Korekazu, he was permitted to use the “Unju” name.
His style closely resembles that of his master Korekazu, producing gunome-midare with rough nie and a deep nioiguchi. His signatures include “Tanba no Kuni Ayabe-jū Katō Unju Shin’ichi Saku,” “Ishidō Unju Fujiwara Shin’ichi,” and “Tanba Ayabe Shin Katō Shin’ichi.”
This piece was made in Ansei 6 (1859). The previous year (Ansei 5) was marked by Ii Naosuke’s Ansei Purge, and the following year (Ansei 7) saw Ii Naosuke’s assassination in the Sakuradamon Incident. Thus, this tanto was created during the turbulent closing years of the Edo period. Its construction reflects the times, with a sharp form and a slightly diminished fukura.
It was made shorter in length, designed so that it would not obstruct movement when carried as a sidearm in case of sword combat.
The blade is in an old polish but shows no rust. The koshirae is an aikuchi mounting made in the late Edo period, and it is in good condition.
While excellent for appreciation, it is also highly suitable for Iaido, tameshigiri, or as a sidearm for Kyudo (archery).

鎺(habaki) : 銀無垢一重の腰祐乗。
縁頭(fuchigashira) :水牛の角。
目貫(menuki) :素銅地蟹の図。
柄(tsuka) :鮫は親粒が付き巻鮫。
小柄(kozuka) : 鉄地瓢箪の図金象嵌。
栗形(kurikata) : 鉄地蝶の図金象嵌。
鞘(saya) :焦げ茶色の波模様変わり塗。
鐺(kojiri) ：鉄地藤の図金象嵌。

研：古研ぎのため、少し曇っていますが、錆は有りません。
傷：欠点に成るような傷は有りません。
