Yamagami Harima-no-kami Kunitoshi was a swordsmith active in Bungo Mori during the late Edo period. His signatures (mei) include inscriptions such as “Bungo Mori-jū Kunitoshi,” “Hōshū Mori-jū Kunitoshi,” and “Harima-no-kami Kunitoshi.”
During the Edo period, Bungo Mori was governed by the Kurushima clan, descendants of the Kurushima naval family (Kurushima Suigun), who ruled the domain with a stipend of 14,000 koku and established the Mori Jinya (domain headquarters) there.
In the Bakumatsu period (late Edo), the domain’s official stance united in support of the Emperor and the overthrow of the Shogunate.
It is believed that Harima-no-kami Kunitoshi forged imperial loyalist sword in Mori domain.
This particular piece is a splendid wakizashi, forged with a well-packed jigane (steel surface) and features a gunome hamon in nie-deki (crystalline martensite).
The blade shows some hiké (slight surface wear) due to an old polish, but the jigane and hamon are clearly visible and well-preserved.
The koshirae (mounting) has some damage to the tsukamaki (handle wrapping), but the lacquered saya (scabbard) in kawari-nuri style remains in very good condition.
Both the blade and the fittings are in good overall condition, making this sword highly suitable for collection.
*The handle wrapping (tsukamaki) will be rewrapped free of charge.
